Summary:Actress Irma P. Hall was born on June 3, 1935 in Beaumont, Texas, and was raised on the South Side of Chicago. After graduating from high school, Hall attended Briarcliffe College where she was selected for her first acting role in a theatrical production of Amahl and the Night Visitors. She transferred to Texas College in Tyler, Texas, and pursued her B.A. degree in foreign language education. Hall taught in the Dallas Public School system for twenty years before landing a role in Raymond St. Jacques's Book of Numbers. In 1996, she gained fame when she was featured alongside Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones in the film A Family Thing. She played Mama Joe in Soul Food. Hall received many awards and accolades including a NAACP Image Award, induction into the Texas Film Hall of Fame, and the 2004 Prixe du Jury for her role in The Ladykillers.
