The heroine is Otilia, a wealthy Mexican woman who has a plain-looking face, but a beautiful body. She falls for an outlaw while helping him recover from his gunshot wounds and when he does not return her love, seeks to have him killed. The novel won Mexico's Xavier Villarrutia prize.
